The Question

The sun slowly sets in the western sky
and the shadows march
across the desert sand
heralding the night.

The night air is filled
with the smell of burning greasewood
and perfume.

Off in the distance
the coyotes and owls sing their songs
and the night desert awakens
and comes to life.

We speak of everything and of nothing
and I wonder.

Will the dawn find my boots
outside her door.
